-- Exclusive Interview Advisory for Tuesday, December 1, 2009 (World AIDS Day)
WHO & WHY:
The face of HIV and AIDS has changed over the past three decades. The disease, originally called Gay-related Immune Deficiency (GRID), is now on the rise among heterosexuals, women, African Americans, Latinos and men who have sex with men. Crystal methamphetamine use is also a contributing factor to increasing rates of HIV. More than one million Americans are living with HIV and/or AIDS - over 104,234 in New York City alone.
Gay Men's Health Crisis (GMHC) was started 27 years ago by New Yorkers responding to a mysterious epidemic killing the people they loved. Since then, the organization has evolved to serve the changing needs of the different populations affected by HIV. Today, on World AIDS Day, GMHC is reaffirming its commitment to continue helping everyone affected by the disease and wants New Yorkers to "Fight AIDS. Love Life."
In addition to launching a re-designed, easy to navigate Web site (www.GMHC.org) complete with new resources for New Yorkers seeking HIV testing, treatment, counseling, prevention education, care services, etc., GMHC is announcing an innovative, interactive resource for people struggling with crystal methamphetamine. MyMethLife.org aims to curb the rampant spread of this disease in this underserved community.
